ECOWAS defence chiefs have said they are solidly behind democracy in the face of the Niger military coup.

ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) disclosed this on Friday at the end of their three-day Extra Ordinary Meeting in Abuja.

General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff and President of the committee, said it is imperative for CDS in the region to translate deliberation from the gathering into concrete results in their respective countries.

According to him, the situation in the Niger Republic requires a coordinated effort to get the country back to democracy.

He added all-encompassing approach including military, political and diplomacy should be adopted to end the situation in Niger.

“We have acknowledged the need for a comprehensive approach encompassing political, security and diplomatic dimensions.

“It is imperative that we translate our deliberations into concrete actions that effectively address the crisis and prevent a recurrence in the future.
“Democracy is what we stand for, and democracy is what we will sustain.”

Most West African countries were present meeting except Niger, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso.

GISTS VILLA News recalls that Mali and Burkina Faso backed the coup in Niger.
