A man who was already being suspected to be a rapist has decided to make a dramatic escape on sighting the law.
The man identified only as Simeon, caused a scene yesterday when he jumped into River Niger.
Simeon was said to have jumped after sighting a policeman by the river bank.
According to Leadership, an eyewitness, Paul Ijeh said the suspect had been on the wanted lists of the police for allegedly raping a 10-year old girl in Okpanam community, Delta State, adding that efforts by the police in Okpanam to track him down proved abortive when he fled the community.
It was gathered that the rape suspect, a native of Okpanam community, had also committed other atrocities, ranging from alleged robbery and land deals before the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
Informed sources revealed that since two months ago, Simeon allegedly moved into the eastern states where he occasionally calls his close friends after which he destroys his Sim Card.
Expectedly, he was said to have sighted a policeman by the head bridge while on the walk way when he allegedly jumped into the River-Niger for fear of the unknown.
The eyewitness further said passersby including motorists travelling to Onitsha were shocked to watch the suspect dive a full length into the River Niger.
But some police officers at Okpanam police who did not want their names in the print said the suspect had been on the wanted lists for alleged rape, adding that “We are not too sure he was the one who jumped into the River-Niger, we heard somebody jumped into the River Niger.”
