Republican Donald Trump has defeated his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the USelection and will become the 45th President of the United States.
Hillary Clinton went into Election Day with a lead in the polls, but confidence in her becoming America’s first female President rapidly disappeared as results started coming in.
Trump has won key swing states including Ohio, North Carolina and Florida to move toward the 270 electoral votes needed to claim the White House.
The New York Times began predicting Trump would win the election at around 2.45am – having rated his chances at just 20% when the first polls closed.
Meanwhile, Vice President elect Mike Pence has taken to the stage ahead of Donald Trump.
He says it’s hard for him to express the honour he and his family will feel to serve as Vice President.
Thereafter, Trump walks to the podium with his wife Melania and his children.
He stands on the stage in New York after a landslide victory, as the 45th President Elect of the United States to speak to supporters at the Hilton Midtown.
Mrs Clinton has telephoned Mr Trump to concede, but will not be speaking publicly this evening, it was learnt.
