In yet another incident of extortion and harassment by the Nigerian police, a Twitter user has narrated her brother’s experience at the hands of men of the Nigerian Police Force.
Her brother whose name was withheld was arrested by an “Anticult” division of the police in Port Harcourt.
She recounted his experience in a series of tweets.

So, yesterday, my brother was in his car, infront of his friend’s house, about to drive off when men of an ‘Anticultism Unit’ rounded him up

They ordered him out, searched his car & his body thoroughly. They didn’t see anything, so, they told him to follow them to their office

He asked what his offence was, they slapped him, put him in handcuffs & pushed him into their Hilux.

They asked him questions like ‘Who is your father?’, ‘Why is a small boy like you driving car?’.
Please, when did this become an offence?!

His car papers & licence were up to date. He had nothing on him, he wasn’t driving recklessly but he was just picked on cos he’s a young boy

They claimed they were taking him to their station but drove him round & asked for the money he had, else, they lay a false charge on him.

He kept asking for what he did but was replied with slaps. He had just 6k on him, they said it’s not enough, he should make use of the ATM.

They paraded him on the streets in handcuffs because he said he didn’t have his ATM. They took the 6k he had, then told him to leave.

We went to the Abuloma police station & spoke to the Head of Anticultism Unit but he claimed those men are not from his station.

Their Hilux didn’t have number plates, they didn’t have name tags. Who is empowering these men to continually harass young men@GovWike?

There has been no official response from the Nigerian Police force but the Police Complaint Response Unit have been alerted.
We sincerely hope this incident will not go the way of several other CRU investigations where the case would be declared “closed” after denials from the police authorities.
