June 5th was World Environment Day (WED). A day set aside to celebrate the environment and raise global awareness on the importance of keeping a healthy and green environment worldwide.
Social and Environment Friendly Foundation (SEFF)  an NGO passionate about the environment and waste management in conjunction with Foundation Starters, an NGO that educates children on the importance of the environment and the need to reduce waste came together to celebrate this year’s WED.
This year’s theme focuses on the illegal trade of wildlife and encourages everyone to “Go Wild for Life”. Wildlife are being endangered and pose the risk of extinction if we don’t act now. Animals like elephants, rhinoceros, gorillas, lions, tigers are being killed for their meat, skin, fur, tusks and even for sport. Forests are fast disappearing as we encroach into their habitats. Biodiversity was created for a purpose and the wildlife play an important role in it.
The two NGOs organized a field trip for pupils of Flourish academy, Agbede, Ikorodu to the world of recycling to buttress the teachings on environmental waste and how it can be managed. They were taking to Richard Newman Recycling plant in Ogba where they were amazed seeing the complete process of recycling used nylon wastes to produce polythene bags and polyethylene materials (HDPE and LDPE pellets) for further use by other manufacturing companies. It was an eye opener for the children and so much fun.
Both NGOs also organized a rally with the procession starting from St. Agnes, Maryland to Gani Fawehinmi park, Ojota. The event, which was coordinated by Mr. Uchenna Anyanwu and fully supported by the Ministry of Environment.
Brief talks on this year’s WED theme was elaborated on by guest speaker Mr Yussuff Kilani, an environment enthusiast and Mrs Tolu Adeyo from the Ministry of Environment. They encouraged participants to imbibe the culture taking care of the environment and spread the word. Branded T shirts and fliers were shared to the public to commemorate the day and Radio Nigeria 97.7 was also there to cover the occasion.
